The Last Jedi: The Poster & Final Trailer Have Arrived!

Now that the Blade Runner 2049 hype circus has left town (and note to Lucasfilm – that is how you follow up a classic film after 30+ years), it’s time for desperate YouTubers across the land to start laying on the overwrought excitement for December’s Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.

That’s right: the final trailer is here.

By focusing on Luke, Rey and Kylo Ren the trailer is giving me pretty much what I want to see. The shifting dynamic between Rey and Kylo looks exciting – specifically, the dangled possibility that the two end up working together. Given that Ren’s conflict makes him by far the most interesting character of the sequels (Finn has potential but, so far, not the execution), I’m all up for seeing developments that add further depth and complexity to his arc.

Luke’s dialogue doesn’t allay the concerns I have about his portrayal, as it’s more grist to the mill for the idea that he’s hiding out of fear. But then in fairness, from the trailers for The Force Awakens you would have expected Harrison Ford’s deadbeat character to at least slightly resemble Han Solo (which he didn’t), so there’s always that glimmer of hope that we’re being misled again. Maybe this isn’t going to go the way we think after all…

To complete the marketing double whammy, the trailer drop was preceded by the reveal of a brand new poster. Not as striking as the bold white and red character posters we saw a few months ago, and nowhere near the class of a Drew Struzan piece, but still – not too shabby…
