The Rise of Skywalker: D23 Special Look
A few fans I’ve encountered on forums and social media have been pretty certain that when the Episode IX marketing attack rolls out it’ll be an all-out barrage of nostalgia and callbacks to the rest of the saga. Well, it just so happens that the D23 “Special Look” at The Rise of Skywalker does little to dispel that notion…
It’s a nice montage of the saga films and the sequel films, no problems there. The music is what we’ve come to expect from the Sequel Trilogy marketing so far – themes you know played loudly – but being the third time of asking the impact that this approach had in 2015 has been lost. The clip of Boba Fett from Jabba’s Palace being among the Empire Strikes Back segment has rubbed me the wrong way on each viewing, but that’s just me – overall it’s a good selection of key moments and cool visuals.
As for the new footage from The Rise of Skywalker? Well, it’s… OK, I guess. We still know nothing of the plot and there are almost certainly elements of misdirection in there (remember Finn with a lightsaber in the marketing for The Force Awakens?). That said, while dark side Rey isn’t a particular draw for me now (it all depends on the execution) my 12-year old self would have absolutely loved it. Kudos to JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio already, in that case.
Another cool visual is the enormous fleet of Star Destroyers, which also ties in with the theory that Palpatine has been amassing an army beyond known space. Would that be the Second Order? I have no idea. Let’s hope Abrams actually gives a damn about the established lore this time and at least tries to make his film make sense.
Guess we’ll find out in December.
